Cheap Home Phone Calls with SKYPE
Skype technology is spreading like wild fire, with it’s potentially massive savings on your home phone bill it’s no wonder why. But just what is Skype? Well it’s a specialised peice of software which any body with a computer can use. Simply download and install it, then plug in a headset (ear and mouth peice) or a USB phone (both of which can be brought cheaply) and you are ready to go making free calls. Ideally you will need a broadband connection to make the most of Skype. Overall the quality is fairly good, always audible enough to listen without straining.
There is however one caveat and that is to make free calls the person you are calling needs the same setup on the other end. This is great, for example, if you phone a specific person abroad a lot. I have a friend in Australia and I mentioned Skype to him, now we both have a Skype set up and no long distance calls on my phone bill any more! If you want to phone regular land lines and mobiles which can sometimes be cheaper than regular phone call providers, but not the cheapest way of calling (more on this in another article).
If Skype really takes off then regular phone call suppliers such as BT and Telewest may become redundant, but the good news will be more free calls, presuming Skype don’t suddenly introduce charges.
